Smart Captions generates titles, captions and descriptive tags for your images using sophisticated image analysis tools and generative AI prompts tasked with creating content specifically for online photography stores.
Smart Captions helps to make your images and stores more attractive and discoverable by adding rich, detailed content that’s visible to potential customers both on your store and in search engines.
Why use Smart Captions?
Will using Smart Captions improve my store's search ranking and sales opportunities?
Yes. Images which have detailed metadata such as titles, captions and tags are more likely to be returned in search results than images with no added details. Including rich, descriptive details on your store image pages also makes images more attractive to potential customers, and more likely that they’ll be shared via social media or other marketing opportunities.
Can buyers search my store using Smart Caption details?
Yes. All Smart Captions details are saved and displayed on your images and store. This means that potential buyers can search using this information via your on-site search, but more importantly, they also become available to search engines making your images and store more discoverable.
How do Smart Captions work?
How are my images analysed?
Picfair sends a 512px thumbnail of each image to our AI partners (currently Anthropic or Gemini) which then use AI models to analyse the content of each image and output descriptive data. The images are not stored or used in other processes by the AI partners (see more below).
What details are generated?
Smart captions will generate a creative and concise title, a one to two sentence descriptive caption, and up to 20 single or two-word descriptive tags for your images.
How do I generate details for my images?
Images will be automatically queued by Picfair if they are missing either a title, caption or tags, or they can be manually added by you from your Image Library. Select images from either list, and use the ‘Generate details’ button to create titles, captions and tags for all selected images.
Do I control how Smart Captions are applied?
Can I review and edit the generated details?
Yes. All titles, captions and tags are displayed for review and editing after they’ve been generated. You can choose to accept them as displayed, or edit by removing, amending or adding any content. You can also deselect images if you don’t want to apply any of the generated details.
Will existing metadata I've already added be overwritten?
Yes. Smart Captions generates a new set of titles, captions and tags based on the image content. Any existing information saved on the image will be overwritten. You’ll see a confirmation box when you save any details if any overwriting will occur.
Can I run Smart Captions on images I've already uploaded?
Yes. Any images that you’ve already uploaded that are missing any details will be automatically added to the ‘Queued by Picfair’ list. If you have images that already have details, but you’d like to generate details using Smart Captions, you can drag and drop via your Image Library, or use the ‘Send to Smart Captions’ button in the image details panel.
How do Smart Captions work with my Image Library?
Can I generate details for multiple images at once?
Yes. You can generate details in batches of 20 images from either list in Smart Captions. We do this in batches to make the review process as manageable as possible, and the ensure your images are processed as efficiently as possible.
Does Smart Captions run automatically when I upload, or do I trigger it manually?
You’re always in control of when Smart Captions runs and when the details are applied to your images. Smart Captions is triggered manually using the ‘Generate details’ button, it doesn’t run automatically on upload.
Are my images shared with third parties, and who holds the rights to the content?
Are my images sent to a third party for analysis?

Who owns the details generated by Smart Captions?
The copyright of your images, including all their content and details, always remains the copyright of the photographer. Sending images to Smart Captions AI partners does not give any AI partner the rights to any of the content viewed or generated by the partner.
The photographer retains all rights to their images, and both the inputs (the image) and outputs (title, caption, tags) are owned by the photographer.
